i was with a new friend yesterday and he was telling us how he worked on a maple syrup farm and then he kind of pulls me aside and was like “hey don’t tell anyone but i can get you some maple syrup at a nice discount price but technically it’s not legal but let’s keep that on the down low” and i think i just made friends with an illegal maple syrup dealer

I met my wife at a Star Trek convention. She was study abroad from France and spoke little English, and I didn’t know a lick of French. So, for the first few months of our relationship, we communicated by speaking Klingon.

Hear more tales of nerdery in this week’s Pwn Up! (via dorkly)

Okay I’m not even a Star Trek fan but that’s beautiful.

media observation of the day: female faces in photoshoots that involve nudity.
i was actually just talking about this to a journlist the other day.
if you look at the faces pulled by female rock musicians in photoshoots where they’re also wearing very little…you learn a lot.
i’ve done lots of photoshoots where I wanted to be naked to feel POWERFUL, and then there’s always that question: how are you powerful once you’re naked, and not left feeling objectified and vulnerable (and…degraded?)
my answer was always to pull a fuck-you/screamy face, a la ms miley here.
TITS! but AGRHHGGHHHH!!!
it’s like the universal facial signature for I AM NAKED BECAUSE I WANT TO BE BUT FOR GOD’S SAKE DON’T THINK I AM BEING PORNY.
once you bite your lip while showing nipple: GAME OVER. newp. you gotta be screamy, otherwise you feel sleazy.
of course, as people have pointed out re: terry richardson, there’s always the question of who’s on the other side of the camera. is it a woman? a man? an asshole? did miley rip it all off of her own volition or was some salivating perv like “SHOW MORE BEWB MILEY!”
unlikely.
in my experience: photographers almost never ask you to strip further down. they’re happy when you’re brave enough to do it, but it’s almost always the model/artist/musician calling the shots.
just food for thought.

I’m not really sure how to feel about this, because I think you can still be powerful and strong while biting your lip, but I totally get what they’re saying.

yeah - that’s the weird paradox. you CAN be. but what you choose to do in the moment says a lot. i still haven’t found any answers to this….it’s right up there with the shaving issue. once you’ve heard billions of women saying: ”well…i don’t shave because i HAVE to, i shave because i WANT to”…you just don’t really buy it.
you WANT to….WHY?
often because the factors at work are harsh, the outside cultural judgement is harsh, and it’s easier to just shave and make it easy on yourself, the same way pulling a face can deflect the in-house shame of nudity. same category, kinda.
we live in context.

What’s so powerful about being naked? So you have your clothes off. That doesn’t make you powerful; that makes you naked.

that’s a good point - and again it’s all about context. we give nudity power…because we give nudity power. WHY is a huge question. i’m not going to try to answer it in this tumblr thread. but maybe someone else has an idea.

PLEASE READ THIS POST

See this statue? It’s located at the Glendale Central Library.
Big deal right? Yes. Yes it is.

She sits here today as a memorial for the victims of the sexual slavery and abuse committed by the Japanese imperial military during WWII. Right now, Japan is running a petition to take her down.

We cannot let this happen.

Every Wednesday, the woman of Korea that were used as sexual slaves protest and cry out. However, Japan refuses to acknowledge their suffering. There have been no apologies and no recognition.

Please, please don’t let them get rid of her. Their pain deserves to be recognized and sympathized.

Luckily, There is a petition going on to save the girl and allow her to continue sitting in Glendale CL. The link can be found here and you can read more about everything that she stands for here.

Thank you so much for reading this. Even if you can’t sign this, please signal boost so other people will.
